School 2.0 “The Science Leadership Academy”
Summary: This article is all about schools, how they teach, and how we can change the ways we teach so students are engaged in what’s going on. They do this by having a lot of things online. Whether it’s a project with instant messaging or uploading things to their blog, these are the transitions they’re willing to take to teach their students. Their classrooms consist of normal classrooms however all students have a laptop and some other form of technology with them. Basically this school is all about technology, keeping up with the latest forms, and using these types of technology to teach classrooms. It seems like it could work.
Question #1: Should we change our classrooms so the students can be more engaged, or should we stick to the book? I think it’s important for students to learn but I don’t think we need to change our whole curriculum just so they will be more interested. I do agree however to have different forms of technology in the classroom and to use them on a regular basis. Just because a student doesn’t understand something or because they’re bored doesn’t mean we need to change everything around. It does seem very neat but also a lot more work.
Question #2: What are you supposed to do with the kids who aren’t technology savvy? I’m guessing that all of the students who go here are very up to date with technology. I think that if you did have student who wasn’t for some reason though, you would not only have to teach them about what you learn that year but you might also have to teach them how to use different forms of technology. It’s very important for them to know about technology in their future so I think the more you use it in the classroom the more students will enjoy working with it and the more they will understand how to use it.

Virtual Schooling
Summary: This article is obviously on virtual school, which is also known as an online class. There are three very important people that are in the online class; the teacher, the administrator, and the facilitator. Each of these jobs is very important since they are the backbone of the class. Virtual Schooling is very popular in grades K-12. This is interesting because I had never heard about online schooling in these young grades until this article, I had only heard of online classes in college. In order to be an online teacher you must go through proper training to learn how to use the program. Virtual Schooling is becoming very popular and most teachers these days are being asked to be facilitators for online classes.
Question #1: Do people really want to take online classes? Yes! As a matter of fact I take at least one online class a semester. It’s extremely convenient and I am able to do my work when I have time. I really like that I don’t have a certain time that I have to be at the class, it fits into my schedule very nicely. One thing that you have to be very careful with though is not being caught up on your work. Many think online class and they think piece of cake, this is going to be easy. In fact it’s the exact opposite. You have to be very responsible when taking an online class because you have to remember to go online everyday and check what’s due. You don’t have a teacher holding your hand through everything.
Question #2: Would you want to teach online classes for K-12? Honestly, I don’t know how you would. I think that K-12 are the most important grades and they need to be taught in person. Especially in high school, if we had all of our students taking online classes in high school, they would never graduate. They would sleep in all day and party all night. As for the younger elementary school kids, I don’t see how they would even take the classes, it just seems too imaginary to me. But for college, it’s amazing!

Should Schools Regulate Offsite Online Behavior?
Summary: there are two points/sides to this article, which are obviously yes and no. For the woman who is saying yes, she says that there is too much cyber bullying out there and we need to help kids because it causes tensions at school. She reports that a girl in Japan killed another child at school because of what was said to her or posted online about her. She also says that recently schools fights have been traced back to online postings. No for the woman who is against is she says that we are loosing sight of the central term which is “reasonable.” She agrees that online postings are a problem but she doesn’t think the schools need to interfere. She puts it as assisting all students when crossing the street, it’s impossible, we can’t be with them for ever step, there are too many children and it shouldn’t be the schools who regulate these problems when they’re happening at home.
Question #1: How far is too far? How far is too far for schools to go when there are problems with students and online postings? I think that the schools should regulate the online postings and chatting to some degree. But I don’t think they should spend a lot of time on it. Maybe if they had an assembly on cyber bullying and what it can lead to and things of that sort. I think that the only thing schools should be able to do is print out the conversation that was going on between the students and give it to the parents. Inform the parents what’s going on under their roof because more than likely they have no idea.
Question #2: How many hours should students be able to go online daily at home? I know this is the type of question that only parents can regulate, since it can relate to how long should students play video games at home, but I think that we should set some grounds as teachers and if the parents follow them then great. I think they should be monitored while being online. If there is too much cyber bullying going on then they should only be able to go online to play games and for research. Children shouldn’t be starting fights over the internet; they should be outside playing with their friends! They’re growing up too fast and the adults sometimes need to be reminded who wears the pants in the family!

Social Justice: Choice or Necessity?
Summary: This article is mainly about using and not using technology in the classroom to enhance teaching and learning. But it focuses more on instructional technology than any other type. The article states “students must be technologically fluent and able to use technology to solve problems with various sources of information, create new representations of their knowledge, and enhance their learning through the diverse strategies afforded by technology… at least 80% of all hobs in the next two decades would require workers to be technologically fluent, this means if workers are not well prepared in using technology to succeed in the workplace, they will be forced to take low-paying jobs with limited potential for advancement.” Therefore the social justice issue is that not all teachers are using technology in their classroom and it could potentially be setting up our future generations for failure!
Question #1: Do you think it is the teachers place to decide whether to use technology in the classroom or not? No, I don’t think it’s the teachers place or choice! I think all teachers should have to take a mandatory class that teaches them how to use computers, such as the EDU 422 class that I am in now. Technology is changing so much and if we have teachers out there who aren’t up to date on it, then we’re going to have students who aren’t up to date on it as well. We need technology in the classroom, as much as possible.
Question #2: Why do teachers not use technology in the classroom? I think it’s because they don’t know how to use it themselves so how are they going to teach it to the children. This is why we need computer teachers, not the same multi subject teacher that they have everyday who takes the students to the computer lab and lets them explore. They need a real teacher who will teach them the basics of the computer and then progress on the topic every year until they know everything they need to, to succeed in life. Just because the teachers doesn’t know how to use technology doesn’t mean the students shouldn’t suffer.
